Dreams as defined by Webster’s Dictionary: “A Dream is a series of thoughts, images or emotions occurring during sleep.” (Webster’s International Dictionary page 688)
A wise person once explained the importance of dreams saying: “Dreams are the perfect way to hear from God. When you are dreaming, you are quiet, so you can’t ignore Him. Plus, you are not easily distracted.” Dreams are the chosen way in which God uses to show His will and purpose.
If we dream every night, then how can we tell which dreams are from God? Not every dream or vision is from the Lord. The Bible warns us that the enemy “disguises himself as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11: 14). He’ll use dreams or visions to spread doubt, discouragement and ungodly directions. If a dream or vision tries to convince you of something contrary to the Word of God, it is absolutely not from the Lord.
- The Prophet Job tell us that, “For God speaks again and again, though people do not recognize it. He speaks in dreams, in visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they lie in their beds. He whispers in their ears and terrifies them with warnings. He makes them turn from doing wrong; he keeps them from pride. He protects them from the grave, from crossing over the river of death” (The Tawrat, Job 33:14-18). These verses clearly tell us that God speaks to keep a man from being destroyed by his own pride and sin. God uses dreams to reveal weakness in our lives that should be dealt with.
- “‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ declares the Lord. ‘As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.'” (Isaiah 55: 8-11). Here God says that His thoughts are different from ours, so through dreams God can bring change in our thoughts and behavior to guide us into coherence with His Word. God promises that His Word will never come back empty, but it will accomplish what He desires and achieve His purpose.
