When Is a Dream from Allah?

Dreams as defined by Webster’s Dictionary: “A Dream is a series of thoughts, images or emotions occurring during sleep.” (Webster’s International Dictionary page 688)

A wise person once explained the importance of dreams saying: “Dreams are the perfect way to hear from God. When you are dreaming, you are quiet, so you can’t ignore Him. Plus, you are not easily distracted.” Dreams are the chosen way in which God uses to show His will and purpose.

If we dream every night, then how can we tell which dreams are from God? Not every dream or vision is from the Lord. The Bible warns us that the enemy “disguises himself as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11: 14). He’ll use dreams or visions to spread doubt, discouragement and ungodly directions. If a dream or vision tries to convince you of something contrary to the Word of God, it is absolutely not from the Lord.

  • The Prophet Job tell us that, “For God speaks again and again, though people do not recognize it. He speaks in dreams, in visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they lie in their beds. He whispers in their ears and terrifies them with warnings. He makes them turn from doing wrong; he keeps them from pride. He protects them from the grave, from crossing over the river of death” (The Tawrat, Job 33:14-18). These verses clearly tell us that God speaks to keep a man from being destroyed by his own pride and sin. God uses dreams to reveal weakness in our lives that should be dealt with.
  • “‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ declares the Lord. ‘As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.'” (Isaiah 55: 8-11). Here God says that His thoughts are different from ours, so through dreams God can bring change in our thoughts and behavior to guide us into coherence with His Word. God promises that His Word will never come back empty, but it will accomplish what He desires and achieve His purpose.

  1. I have been seeing weird dreams lately of a man in white dress asking me to worship him, he says I am the word of Allah, I created everything, you should believe in me and follow me. I know that we should worship only Allah, what does my dreams mean?

    1. Muhammad, thank you for writing to us. That man in white is Isa Al-Masih (may his peace be upon us) and he is pointed out by the holy books as the Word of Allah, as he told you. In Injil it is written about him: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. ” – Injil, John 1: 1-3. And yet: “He is the image of the invisible God (…) For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities — all things were created through him and for him. ” – Injil, Colossians 1: 15-16. I know it sounds confusing, but these are true and powerful words that can lead you to understand about the straight path. Do not be afraid to ask questions and to research for yourself the importance of these words. The Injil has not been corrupted, as you might think. Allah is all-powerful to protect his holy revelations and will never leave a faithful son unanswered. Ask for wisdom from above and you will understand. I pray Allah may bless you always.

  2. I dreamed that a person in a white garment handed me a little glass torch, and he asked me to share the light with others. He told me, “There is no time, I am coming soon.” Then I woke up. Any help? Thank you.

    1. Thank you Samah for writing and sharing your dream with us. This man handed you a light, and He said that He is coming soon. He asked you to go and share this news with others. In the Qur’an we find that God is the light of the world. (Al-Noor 24:35) In Sura 43:61 the Qur’an tells us that Isa Al-Masih is coming as the sign of the hour. So the man that you have seen in your dream is Isa Al-Masih. In the Injil John 8:12 says, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” So He is asking you to share this news with others, because time is very short.

Then a voice said, “Fear the Lord who made the heavens and earth, the judgment hour is near.” then I woke up. I believe that I saw God Almighty. can you help me understand this dream? Thank you.

    1. Chris, we are happy that you shared this dream with us. Does this describe your dream? “Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth—to every nation, tribe, language and people. He said in a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water.” This is from Injil Revelation 14:6, 7. We encourage you to read more about this. If you have any more questions, please, we are happy to help you.
