The Qur\u2019an did not say that the Holy\nInjil was corrupted. Christians were not accused of distorting their Injil, and\nnot all of the Qur\u2019anic texts that the critics rely upon to argue for the\ncorruption of the Injil pertain to it. We will discuss some of these texts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
1 – \u201cDo you covet [the hope, O\nbelievers], that they would believe for you while a party of them used to hear\nthe words of Allah and then distort the words after they had understood it\nwhile they were knowing?\u201d (Al-Baqarah 2:75).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
2 – \u201cAmong the Jews are those who\ndistort words from their [proper] usages and say, \u2018We hear and disobey\u2019 and \u2018Hear\nbut be not heard\u2019 and \u2018Ra\u2019ina,\u2019 twisting their tongues and defaming the\nreligion. And if they had said [instead], \u2018We hear and obey\u2019 and \u2018Wait for us,\u2019\nit would have been better for them and more suitable. But Allah has cursed them\nfor their disbelief, so they believe not, except for a few\u201d (Al-Nisa 4:46).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
3 – \u201cAnd Allah had already taken a covenant from the Children of Israel… So for their breaking of the covenant We cursed them and made their hearts hard. They distort words from their usages and have forgotten a portion of that of which they were reminded…\u201d (Al-Maida 5:12-13). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
4 – \u201cO Messenger, let them not\ngrieve you who hasten into disbelief of those who say, \u2018We believe\u2019 with their\nmouths, but their hearts believe not, and from among the Jews. [They are] avid\nlisteners to falsehood, listening to another people who have not come to you.\nThey distort words beyond their usages, saying \u2018If you are given this, take it;\nbut if you are not given it, then beware.\u2019 But he for whom Allah intends fitnah\n– never will you possess [power to do] for him a thing against Allah. Those are\nthe ones for whom Allah does not intend to purify their hearts. For them in\nthis world is disgrace, and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment\u201d (Al-Maida\n5:41).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here are some of the comments on\nthese verses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These texts are directed to the\nJews. Therefore, the Qur\u2019an says: \u201cand from among the Jews,\u201d so there is no\nmention of the Christians or the Bible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fakhr al-Din al-Razi says in his\ncommentary on Al-Maida 5:13, \u201cThe intention of corruption is to cast false\nresemblance and corrupt interpretations, and to divert the word from its true\nmeaning to a meaning that is false by using verbal tricks, as the people of\ninnovations today do to the verses that do not fit with their beliefs\u2014this is\nthe explanation of corruption.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Al-Baydawi said in an explanation on\n(al-Ma\u2019ida 5:41), \u201cThey sent them (from Zinya) from a group to Bani Qurethah,\nto ask the Messenger of Allah, and Ibn Suria judged between them. So, he told\nhim, \u2018I ask you by the name of Allah\u2026 who handed down this book to you with its\nteachings of what is lawful and unlawful, do you find in it stoning of the\nimmune?\u2019 He said \u2018Yes,\u2019 and they jumped on him, and he said, \u2018I was afraid that\nif I make him out to be a liar, that will bring down the torment.\u2019 Therefore,\nthe Messenger of Allah ordered the adulterers to be stoned at the door of the\nmosque.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Al-Tabari said in his commentary (Al-Nisa\n4: 45), \u201cThe Jews insulted Muhammad with the ugliest words, and said to him, \u2018Hear\nfrom us deafness\u2019 as someone saying to the man, \u2018May God let you not hear.\u2019 The\nword Ra\u2019ina<\/em> was interpreted by the attribution of Ibn Wahab as that\nwhich is wrong to speak.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Yusuf Durra Al-Haddad comments on\nthese texts, saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n 1- \u201cFirst we see that there is no\nmention of the Christians and the Gospel at all. We challenge anyone to prove\nin the Qur\u2019an that it was intended for the Christians and their Gospel. How do\nthey accuse the Qur\u2019an by accusing the Christians of distorting the Bible? Or\nhow do they call the Bible corrupted?<\/p>\n\n\n\n 2 \u2013 \u201cIn all places, the Qur\u2019an was\nreferring to a group of Jews, and it is mentioned that the other team do not\napprove them in their work; there is no room for corruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 3 \u2013 \u201cThe corruption that is\nmentioned is the interpretation of the text, not the alteration, as evidenced\nby the fact that they are a group of \u2018he Scripture follow it, as it ought to be\nfollowed\u2019 (Al-Baqarah 2:121). There is no fear of the corruption of the text\nnor its correct interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 4 \u2013 \u201cIt is not the whole book that\nis dealt with, nor the whole Torah, or all of its regulations, but the meaning\nof the stoning in the Torah, and some commentators add the attribute of\nMuhammad, \u2018the Unlettered Prophet, whom they find mentioned in the Torah and\nthe Gospel in their possession\u2019 (Al-Aaraf 7:157). The whole idea is only about\none or two verses of the Torah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The question that arises is how the\nQur\u2019an attests to a distorted book:<\/p>\n\n\n\n 1 – \u201cHe has sent down upon you, [O\nMuhammad], the Book in truth, confirming what was before it. And He revealed\nthe Torah and the Gospel\u201d (Al-Imran 3: 3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n 2 – \u201cAnd We sent, following in their\nfootsteps, Jesus, the son of Mary, confirming that which came before him in the\nTorah; and We gave him the Gospel, in which was guidance and light and\nconfirming that which preceded it of the Torah as guidance and instruction for\nthe righteous\u201d (Al-Maida 5:46).<\/p>\n\n\n\n 3 – \u201cAnd let the People of the\nGospel judge by what Allah has revealed therein. And whoever does not judge by\nwhat Allah has revealed – then it is those who are the defiantly disobedient\u201d (Al-Maida\n5:47).<\/p>\n\n\n\n 4 – \u201cAnd if only they upheld [the\nlaw of] the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been revealed to them from their\nLord, they would have consumed [provision] from above them and from beneath\ntheir feet. Among them are a moderate community, but many of them – evil is\nthat which they do\u201d (Al-Maida 5:66).<\/p>\n\n\n\n 5 – \u201cSay, O People of the Scripture, you are [standing] on nothing until\nyou uphold [the law of] the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been revealed to\nyou from your Lord\u201d (Al-Maida 5:68).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" The Qur\u2019an did not say that the Holy Injil was corrupted.
