A question that must be asked: is the Word of God created? There has been a lot of dialogue on this important subject. There are two sides: a team that says God\u2019s Word is created, and a side that says that God\u2019s Word is eternal and uncreated. Let\u2019s look at what the Qur\u2019an and the hadith say about this important subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Most Merciful, taught the Qur\u2019an, created man\u201d (Rahman 55:1-3).God has made that difference between His knowledge and creation. He imparted the Qur\u2019an, and the human is His creation. His knowledge is not created. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Qur\u2019an affirms that the words of God are infinite: \u201cSay, If the sea were ink for [writing] the words of my Lord, the sea would be exhausted before the words of my Lord were exhausted, even if We brought the like of it as a supplement\u201d (Al-Kahf 18:109). In addition, the Qu\u2019ran \u0631says, \u201cAnd if whatever trees upon the earth were pens and the sea [was ink], replenished thereafter by seven [more] seas, the words of Allah would not be exhausted. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise\u201d (Luqman 31:27). His words are infinite. If the sea that God created were ink for writing, and the trees were pens, the ink of the sea and the forests of pens would perish, but the words of God would not perish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt was narrated that Khawla Bent Hakim said, \u2018I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: He who entered a house and said: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created. Nothing will harm him until he leaves that house\u2019\u201d (Reported by Muslim, 2708).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that \u2018the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: The virtue of the Word of God over all other words is like the grace of God over all of his creation.\u2019\u201d Narrated by Ahmad (3\/390), Abu Dawood (4734) and Tirmidhi (2925). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This hadith includes proof from two aspects that the Word of God is not created:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first is to differentiate between the Word of God and other words\u2014either the Word of God, which is His attribute, or the created words, which are the creation of God. He added the\ndescription of His attributes to Himself and differentiated them from all other words. If all the words were created, there would be no need to differentiate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The second is to differentiate between the Word of God and the words of others, such as the difference between God and people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is reasonable to say that the Word of God, if it is created, has one of two attributes: First, to be a creature that exists in God. Second, to be separated from God. And both cases are invalid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first requires the creature to be part of the Creator, which is invalid. God can exist without His creation. In the second, it is necessary to disconnect the attribute of speech from the Almighty, as the attribute exists with God and not without Him, which means that God has no ability to speak. This is also clearly invalid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When God imparted words describing Himself, His Word was uncreated; for His Words are attributes of Himself, and He is not created. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here, we need to speak about Isa Al-Masih (His peace be upon us), the Word of God, \u201c[And mention] when the angels said, \u2018O Mary, indeed Allah gives you good tidings of a Word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Isa, the son of Mary\u2014distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near [to Allah]\u2019\u201d (Al-Imran 3: 45-46). \u201cIsa Al-Masih the Son of Mary is the Messenger of God, and His Word is delivered to Mary and a Spirit from Him\u201d (Women 4: 171). In these passages, is God\u2019s Word created or eternal?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is important to see that the Qur\u2019an also states, \u201cSo the angels called him while he was standing in prayer in the chamber, \u2018Indeed, Allah gives you good tidings of John, confirming a word from Allah and [who will be] honorable, abstaining [from women], and a prophet from among the righteous\u2019\u201d (Al-Imran 3:39). Al-Tafisr Al-Muyasir Commentary explains this verse, \u201cSo the angels called him while he was standing in prayer in the chamber, praying: that God gives you the news of good tidings, that you will be given a child named Yahya, believe in a Word of God\u2014Isa Ibn Maryam. The Word which is from God (the Word of God), and Yahya believed in Him, is Isa Al-Masih (His peace be upon us)\u2026\u201d Yahya came to the world to preach about Him and prepare the way for Him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Given all this evidence, it is clear that the Word of God is not created. As the Qur\u2019an says, \u201cAllah gives you good tidings of a Word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Isa, the son of Mary.\u201d The Eternal Word of God was called (Jesus Christ) Isa Al-Masih (His peace be upon us). If Christ (His peace be upon us) is a creature, then there is no need to differentiate by describing Him as the Word of God. God\u2019s Word has the attributes of God; the Word of God (Christ, His peace be upon us) is not a creature and is not created.
