\nThe term \u201cAl-Masih\u201dis used eleven times in the Qur\u2019an in reference to \nIsa. Many people simply understand this term to mean \u201canointed one\u201d. \nIt comes from the Arabic root \u201cmsh\u201d which means \u201cto anoint\u201d. In the \nArabic language there is a different word for \u201canointed one\u201d which is \n\u201cmamsuh\u201d. Arabic words follow a specific pattern. By adding vowels to \nthe root word the grammatical structure and the meaning will be \nchanged. When we look at the grammatical structure of \u201cmasih\u201d, it\u2019s \nobvious that it means \u201cmost anointed\u201d or \u201canointed to a high degree, to \nthe point that this anointing is an inherent and permanent quality\u201d. \nThere is a lot of similarity between Arabic and Hebrew languages, the \nword \u201cAl-Masih\u201d, the suffix \u201cal\u201d in both languages makes a difference,\n it gives reference to \u201cspecific\u201d Masih, \u201cAl\u201d refers to someone who is \npreviously known, previously referred to or one in a class of his own.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The meaning of \u201cAl-Masih\u201d is significant when we recognize that Isa \nAl-Masih is the only one who was referred to in the Bible or the Qur\u2019an \nas being \u201cAl-Masih\u201d. None of the other prophets are referred to by this \ntitle. It refers to the Anointed One (Al-Mamsuh).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Allah the Almighty promised King David that one of his descendants \nwould be different from all other kings: \u201cAnd it shall come to pass, \nwhen your days are ended that you must go to be with your fathers, that I\n will raise up your seed after you, who shall be of your sons; and I \nwill establish his kingdom. He shall build me a house, and I will \nestablish his throne forever. I will be his father, and he shall be my \nson: and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took it from him \nthat was before you: But I will settle him in my house and in my kingdom\n forever: and his throne shall be established for evermore\u201d (Tawrat 1 \nChronicles 17:11-14).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What kind of anointing is this? What was Isa Al-Masih anointed with?
\nIn the following verses will see what the Qur\u2019an say about the identity of Isa Al-Masih.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Al-Nisa 4:171, Al-Baqara 2:87 and Al-Maida 5:110 the Qur\u2019an refers to \u201cSpirit\u201d in regard to Isa Al-Masih.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Al-Nisa 4:171, \u201cO People of the Scripture! Do not exaggerate in your \nreligion, and do not say about Allah except the truth. Al-Masih, Isa, \nthe son of Mariam, is the Messenger of Allah, and His Word that He \nconveyed to Mary, and a Spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His \nmessengers, and do not say, \u201cThree.\u201d Refrain\u2014it is better for you. Allah\n is only one God. Glory be to Him\u2014that He should have a son. To Him \nbelongs everything in the heavens and the earth, and Allah is a \nsufficient Protector.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Al-Baqara 2:87, \u201cWe gave Moses the Scripture, and sent a succession \nof messengers after him. And We gave Isa son of Mary the clear proofs, \nand We supported him with the Holy Spirit. Is it that whenever a \nmessenger comes to you with anything your souls do not desire, you grew \narrogant, calling some impostors, and killing others?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Al-Maida 5:110, \u201cWhen Allah will say, \u201cO Isa son of Mary, recall My \nfavor upon you and upon your mother, how I supported you with the Holy \nSpirit. You spoke to the people from the crib, and in maturity. How I \ntaught you the Scripture and wisdom, and the Torah and the Gospel. And \nrecall that you molded from clay the shape of a bird, by My leave, and \nthen you breathed into it, and it became a bird, by My leave. And you \nhealed the blind and the leprous, by My leave; and you revived the dead,\n by My leave. And recall that I restrained the Children of Israel from \nyou when you brought them the clear miracles. But those who disbelieved \namong them said, `This is nothing but obvious sorcery.\u2019\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In order to understand the meaning of the Spirit, there is a need \nlook at the books that came first, for the Qur\u2019an advices, \u201cIf you are \nin doubt about what We revealed to you, ask those who read the Scripture\n before you. The truth has come to you from your Lord, so do not be of \nthose who doubt.\u201d (Yunus 10:94).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Holy Injil describes how the angel Jibra`el spoke to Miriam, \u201cThe\n Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will \novershadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of \nGod.\u201d (Luke 1:35)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These Qur\u2019anic verses state clearly that Isa was more than a prophet,\n if we looked carefully that His anointment with the Spirit is really \nequal to Him been supported and empowered by the Spirit. It is important\n to clear some misunderstandings, for some Muslims say \u201cSpirit\u201d refers \nto the breath of life that each person has (Qur\u2019an 15:29; 32:9; 38:73), \nnor refers to Jibra`el (Qur\u2019an 16:102).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Let\u2019s us take a close look at what the Qur\u2019an says in Al-Maida 5:110 \nconcerning the strengthening or supporting with the Holy Spirit, this \nanointing of the Holy Spirit caused Al-Masih to do many miracles, \u201cYou \nspoke to the people from the crib, and in maturity. How I taught you the\n Scripture and wisdom, and the Torah and the Gospel. And recall that you\n molded from clay the shape of a bird, by My leave, and then you \nbreathed into it, and it became a bird, by My leave. And you healed the \nblind and the leprous, by My leave; and you revived the dead, by My \nleave.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Bible describes how He was anointed by the Holy Spirit at his \nbaptism, \u201cYou know what has happened \u2026 after the baptism that John \npreached\u2013how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and \npower, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under \nthe power of the devil, because God was with him.\u201d (Injil<\/em> Acts 10:37-38)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Al-Masih proclaimed the beginning of His ministry, \u201cThe Spirit of God\n is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.\n He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of \nsight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of \nthe Lord\u2019s favor.\u201d (Injil Luke 4:18-19)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Isa Al-Masih was anointed with the Spirit of God like no other man. \nIf \u201cSpirit of God\u201d means the physical breath of life, as some Muslims \nteach, then any ordinary man should be able to do miracles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Holy Injil declares that \u201cGod is Spirit\u201d (Injil John 4:24) and \nIsa is the Word \u201cthe Word was God\u201d (Injil John 1:1), the eternal Word of\n Allah (Isa), possessed the divine spirit and nature and essence of \nAllah. This eternal Word that co-existed with God from eternity became \nflesh (Injil John 1:14).<\/p>\n\n\n\n To believe that Isa Al-Masih was a prophet is not enough.?
