“If Christianity was something we were making up, of\ncourse we could make it easier. But it is not. We cannot compete, in\nsimplicity, with people who are inventing religions. How Could we? We are\ndealing with fact. Of course anyone can be simple if he has no facts to bother\nabout” (C.S. Lewis. Mere Christianity, Macmillan Company, New York, 1943,\npage 145).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Qur’an testifies that Christians are monotheistic and\nnot infidels (Q. 29:46, 3:113-114, 5:82, 3:55)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To understand who God is, it\u2019s good to use some\nillustrations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
1- The geometric illustration of the Trinity is found in a\ntriangle. The three corners are\ninseparable and simultaneous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
2- Augustine compared the Trinity with love that involves a\nlover, the loved one and a spirit of love between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
3- Time by itself consists of past, present, and future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
4- Fire generates heat and light. Thus fire, with its light\nand heat is one thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
5- In mathematical terms one could compare Trinity with 1 x\n1 x 1 = 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Al-Nisa 4: 171, the Qur’an introduces the idea of the Godhead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“O People of the Scripture! Do not exaggerate in your\nreligion, and do not say about God except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the\nson of Mary, is the Messenger of God, and His Word that He conveyed to Mary,\nand a Spirit from Him. So believe in God and His messengers, and do not say,\n\u201cThree.\u201d Refrain\u2014it is better for you. God is only one God. Glory be to\nHim\u2014that He should have a son. To Him belongs everything in the heavens and the\nearth, and God is a sufficient Protector.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This verse introduces the Two Natures of Isa Al-Masih<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Human:<\/strong> The Son of Mary and the Messenger of God<\/p>\n\n\n\n Divine:<\/strong> The Messiah, His (God’s) Word and a Spirit from Him<\/p>\n\n\n\n This verse also, says that God has<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n 1- A Personality<\/strong>: messenger of God (The Father)<\/p>\n\n\n\n 2- A Word<\/strong>: and His Word (The Son)<\/p>\n\n\n\n 3- A Spirit<\/strong>: and a Spirit from Him (The Holy Spirit)<\/p>\n\n\n\n It’s important to see that the verse says: and don’t say\nThree. Which three the verse referring to? We need the Qur’an answer this\nquestion! <\/p>\n\n\n\n In Surat Al-Maida 5: 116 “And God will say, \u201cO Jesus\nson of Mary, did you say to the people, `Take me and my mother as gods rather\nthan God?’\u201c He will say, \u201cGlory be to You! It is not for me to say what I have\nno right to. Had I said it, You would have known it. You know what is in my soul,\nand I do not know what is in Your soul. You are the Knower of the hidden.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n So, the Three the Qur’an refers to are: God, Mary and Jesus.\nIs this what we believe? No, what we believe in is God the Father, the Son, and\nthe Holy Spirit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Surat Al-Imran 3: 39 explain who Jesus is “Then the\nangels called out to him, as he stood praying in the sanctuary: \u201cGod gives you\ngood news of John; confirming a Word from God, and honorable, and moral, and a\nprophet; one of the upright.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Abu al-Su`ud commented on the phrase “supporting a word\nfrom God,” that is Isa, may He be blessed, by saying, “…it was said\nthat he (John the Baptist) was the first to believe in Him (Jesus) and to\nsupport His being the Word of God and a Spirit from Him. Al Sadi said, “The\nmother of Yahya (John) meeting the mother of Isa (Jesus) asked, “Mary,\nhave you felt my pregnancy?” Mary answered, ‘I too am pregnant.’ She\n(John’s mother) then said, ‘I find that what is in my belly worships what is in\nyour belly.’ From here the above utterance of God ‘supporting a word from God’\ncomes clear” (Abu al-Su`ud Muhammad Ibn Muhammad al-Ahmadi’s Commentary,\npage 233). Why should a child in his mother’s belly worship another child in\nhis mother’s belly younger than him even? <\/p>\n\n\n\n In (Al-Imran 3: 45) “The Angels said, \u201cO Mary, God\ngives you good news of a Word from Him. His name is the Messiah, Jesus, son of\nMary, well-esteemed in this world and the next, and one of the nearest.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n Muhyi al-Din al-Arabi said, “The word is God in theophany… and it is the one divine person and not any other” (“Fusus al-Hukm p. 38). He also said that the word is the divine person. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Isn’t that what the Bible teaches in John 1: 1-5, 14, \u201cIn\nthe beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He\nwas with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him\nnothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the\nlight of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has\nnot overcome it\u2026 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.
